The Hutus and Tutsis were the two main groups in the state of Rwanda. The Tutsis owned and ran the cattle and the Hutus were the farmers. They were peaceful for many years until the European Colonization. During this time, the Belgians decided to create a class system. They viewed the Tutsis being more like themselves so they educated them and gave them the greater power even though the majority of Rwanda was Hutu. When Rwanda could not gain independence from Belgium, the Hutu gained power of the new government. This went on for
decades. In 1973, Hutus president was assassinated. They blamed it all on the Tutsis. On April 6th, 1994 they started to attack the Tutsis. They used knives, clubs, and machetes to slaughter the Tutsis. Men, women, and children were tortured and then killed. Many women were raped or were kept as sex slaves. The worst massacres happened from April 11th to the beginning of May. They started using guns and grenades to kill thousands of Tutsis. The genocide ended when The Rwandan Patriotic Front took over. An estimated of 800,000 Tutsi had been killed in the Rwandan Genocide by the End of July.
